I really like my Toshiba. Haven't had any trouble and I've had it for over a year now. Don't have experience with Mac...Everything HP I've ever bought is crap. Don't waste your money there.

The best laptops, notebooks and all other computers in my opinion are Dells. They definitely give you your money's worth (I got a PC from them a little while ago, it is an absolute beast (500GB Hard Disk with 100GB backup drive, 4GB of RAM, 28" LCD Monitor, free subscriptions to AntiVirus software for 5 years, as well as a 10 year warranty. This cost me around $2000.)) I have a Dell laptop, it is a slightly older model but still has 200GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM and runs very smoothly.HP don't give you much for your money. My first computer was an HP - 15GB hard drive, 256MB RAM, 16" Monitor and no AntiVirus or anything, and it cost me over $6000. Although they look good, they aren't that great.Mac is nice, but there are not as many things to do with it as there are on a PC. The security systems are FAR more advanced, and there are hardly any viruses that can get into your computer (as opposed to the thousands for PCs.)To get a Dell you have to order it in, and you get great stuff if you order online. I think this is the best thing to get. They look great too - the new ones come in 9 different colours!A WORD OF ADVICE: When you get a new computer, make sure to ask for Windows XP instead of Vista. Vista is useless! (It may look good, but it makes my 4GB RAM monster freeze.)Good luck!

Considering you are in America, and American customer support/ quality of computer is lower than were I live... From experience online:ToshibaHPDell are safe. Dells, Acers, HPs, and Toshiba's are the best here, if you exclude gaming computer stores. Apples are unreliable. You'll hear something bad about EVERY place! Trust me, no company doesn't have angry customers in the PC world- if it is of a fair size.I really recommend HP if you are in America.I really recommend HP/Acer if you are in Australia.Anywhere else, Toshiba maintains similar standards worldwide.Macs are okay, but expensive. My laptop is 1000 dollars less than a macbook Pro, but has better specs than the 15.4"You can get a Mac, but a student would probably need to buy Windows as well for college programs... Too expensive and a hassle.. JUST DO NOT GET A MAC BOOK AIR.A college is wireless but no way near what is needed for the macbook air. Trust me, they look good, but not practical for a home, student, business. Maybe for a frequent traveller. Something to use on the road...Lots of people will complain about a company. What they don't realise it they bought a cheap/low grade laptop...Sony Vaio is the worst brand. The laptops are at most, average, but a $1000 more expensive than a regular laptop of better quality [HP or Toshiba] with higher specs. Stay the heck away from Vaio!Rory, I live in Australia and I have lived in multiple states... There is no school I have heard of, or even Uni which a student is required to have a Macbook Pro. Most schools it's optional for a lappy.... Your statement is entirely false... Only time a mac could be requested is specifically for design, although there are no benefits...
