    Default Yamaha R1.

You may not nevertheless know what a cross-flat rotating shaft is, but you will. It’s a link to Valentino Rossi’s MotoGP bike, and it’s the most prominent advancement in literbike engine plan in years. This novel crankshaft organization is component of Yamaha’s most recent YZF-R1, a literbike we tested final week at the Eastern Creek circuit in Australia, and it’s a plan not seen in any old production motorcycle.

The 998cc engine discrete audio is the apparent clue that it’s something particular - it’s akin to a V-4 with a deep, purposeful note that seems a small bit angry. But it’s in the path the motor gives power that sets it apart from its competitor. Gone is the peaky powerband of the premature motor, and in its place is the nearly tractable 4-cylinder literbike yet constructed.

The freshly increased midrange is welcome, but more than that is the feel of a directly connection amongst the throttle and rear tire. In nearly literbikes, a rider is acutely cognizant of the possibleness of constituting high-sided to the moon if the throttle is utilized injudiciously. With the R1, still a moderately skilled rider can safely drift the rear bore on corner exits. In the 600cc and 1000cc supersport classes, the successful mantra has invariably been lighter weight and more power. But with a claimed 182 crankshaft horsepower, the new R1 doesn’t readjust the bar in power product.

And its 454 lb campaigning weight (full of fuel, etc) is fifteen up on the svelte Honda CBR1000RR.nstead, Yamaha has concentrated on its stated concept for the R1: “To deliver a max quantity of repel force in the smoothest manner potential.” We’re happy to report that this isn’t only approximately PR hype - it’s really something a rider can feel afterwards just a short time in the saddle.
