With novel 2011 Monster 796, Ducati has done its array of air-cooled standards. It's a throwback to old 800 and positions itself right in center among the entrance level 696 and more vicious 1100. All Monsters feel extremely light, small and simple to handle in spite its muscular posture, the rider doesn't want any muscle at all.
The 796 is somewhat dissimilar ergonomically than 696 and its big brother 1100. The seat height is somewhat higher than lesser, and somewhat lower than larger, capacity Monster. The broad handlebar gives an extremely good control of that short front end, directional changes are simple, and feel is feather-light.
The 803cc air-cooled L-twin engine has sufficient extra mph more than 696 to create it a feasible upgrade. The power test of rolling off and then hard on in first gear does disclose extra capacity in shape of a facade wheel lift, which 696 is unable of. No such thing occurs in second gear, which does occur on the 1100.
The 803cc engine generates a claimed 87 horsepower at 8250 rpm and 58 ft/lbs of torque at 6250 rpm but, in spite of achieving good first to third gear acceleration, top three gears are ineffective for slow speed miserly riding. The 796 likes its revs many above 1100, which is only natural. You can't allow revs go all the way down to 1000 rpm in top gear and even get massive pull.
