Indica will not replace the current one, but will be sold alongside it. The new car takes the Indica package to a new level. You get a much bigger cabin that can rival many saloons for interior comfort. Overall quality seems to be a notch above the current Indica too, and the plastics inside the cabin feel better put together. The centrally-mounted dials are a neat touch.

Multiple engine options are planned but to begin with, power will come from a pair of Fiat engines. The petrol is a 1.4-litre motor developing around 6Sbhp but it is the 1.3 diesel, the same unit that powers the Swift, that is likely to be the most popular one.

Expect the new Indica to be sold with quite a few options, including ABS and airbags plus the usual power steering and power windows features. The new Indica won't be as cheap as the current model but Tata is sure to make value for money its trump card. Which means it enters Swift territory. However, the Indica is a much roomier car and with the new engines and interiors, it makes a strong case for itself. What Tata needs to ensure is that the car has the required level of quality and reliability from the beginning.
