Last Car India talked about FIAT's plans for a sub-brand to launch a completely new small car in the Indian market in the near future. Following the news, here's some insight into what is in store from the Italian carmaker. The original 1937 Topolino (Italian for small mouse) which formed the base platform for the soo, is about to be revived. Ironically, the current soo that FIAT recently launched in India, will now form the base for the new opolino. As the illustration suggests, the latest Topolino will be a two-door compact car with seating for four adults in pretty much the same way as its future competitors like the VW Up, and the Toyota iQ. Dropping the rear seats will allow for additional boot space.
Under the boot floor is a 900CC two cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 6SPS of power which will put the rear wheel drive into motion. A turbocharged version of the same engine, which currently powers the soo may also be an option later. These engines will be mated to a twin-clutch gearbox similar to the DSG unit from Volkswagen. A manual option should also be available for the more price conscious markets. The Topolino will also integrate a start stop system that cuts the engine when stationary for too long and starts it again as the driver accelerates. The feature has great bearings on fuel efficiency and will prove to be a boon in India.
