India from the Toyota stable will be their SUV offering, the RAV 4. This is the company's smallest SUV and when launched, the RAV 4 will fight for market share with the likes of the Honda CR-V, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and the Chevrolet Captiva.

The RAV 4 is currently in its third generation and in its latest avatar looks stout and muscular. It might not have the dimesnions of the CR-V or the handsome appeal of the Captiva but it still looks like a grown up, well proportioned vehicle. Being smaller in size than other SUVs in its segment, the RAV 4 may not be the most spacious or the most imposing, but the interiors are class leading with the use of high quality materials. It seats five with comfort though there is an option for a third row, meant only for kids.

As engine options, Toyota will get this compact SUV with both the 2.0 VVT-i ISZPS petrol engine as well as the 2.2 D-4D 136PS diesel unit. The RAV 4 comes with a road biased all-wheel drive system and a choice of four-speed auto or five and six-speed manual gearbox options.

The premium compact SUV segment in India is set to get populated with the VW Tiguan being the next entrant. It will be interesting to see how this practical SUV from Toyota matches up to the competition.
