One should never rest on his laurels. And Audi, even after selling nearly one quarter million A6s, making it the world leader in its segment, has done that by introducing a facelifted version of the car in both sedan and Combi forms. The car will be available internationally starting and will hit Indian shores soon after.

It is clear that Audi is readying itself for the advent of the all new Mercedes E-class as well as the successor of the BMW 5-series. And it intends fighting the competition with six important innovations. According to Audi, the A6 with its beauty, comfort, economy, safety, better operability, and high-quality, will be able to keep its rivals at bay.

As with the A8, A3, A4, A5 and the R8, the new A6 too gets I.ED daytime running lights as optional. Together with the revised grille, air intakes and fog lamps the car's front now looks sharper. Moreover, LEDs for the tail lamp, which were so far reserved for the Avant, have made their way to the sedan as well a trick that lends the car a more modern appearance. The differences on the new car compared to the current A6 are small, but fine.

The instrumentation for one sports modern graphics, and in the top version of the MMI system, there's an additional Joystick on the operating knob which improves the intuitive menu guidance. It's similar to the one on the new Q5. Following in the Q7 and A4's footsteps, the refurbished A6 comes with the lane-changing assistant (side assist) as an option. It warns the driver of the cars in his blind spot. Lane assistant, adaptive cruise control and rear view camera are naturally part of the package as well.

But yes, the most interesting bit lies under the bonnet. Because the A6 engines are now stronger and more efficient. Audi promises a 12 percent reduction in fuel consumption for the entire range. With the V6 petrol, there are two new variants with 190 and 220bhp. And both use Audi's new valvelift -system. The variable inlet valve increases the torque, and consumption decreases - at least on the test stand it does. Of particular interest though, is the new three-litre engine with a compressor. The V6has 290bhp and a high-torque of 420 Nm spread wide. Audi claims a 100kmph sprint in 5.9seconds and a top speed of 250kmph for the A6 3.0 TFSI Quattro. ConŽsumption is around llkmpl.

However, if you really want to save money on running costs you ought to get yourself the 136bhp 2.0-litreTDIe poweredA6. It gets a gear shift indicator and according to Audi, a fuel consumption figure which rivals the BMW 520d - the most efficient car among big sedans. And it achieves this by using taller gearing, an on demand servo-pump, brake energy recovery as well as two centimetres lowered body.
