The wraps are off the sixth generation Volkswagen Golf; a completely new car retaining virtues of the previous models and stepping into new VW territory especially on engine front. Although the Golf will not make it to India, its sedan variant, Jetta, is already here sharing similar front end styling and powertrains. And that means you can expect a new Jetta with this nose in early.

The styling of the new Golf was previewed on the Scirocco and it gets similar lines. The head lamp assembly, horizontally aligned high gloss black radiator grille and large air scoops, draws inspiration from the Scirocco. Gone is the chrome goatee grille, replaced by a body coloured bumper.

The already benchmark interiors of the Golf have been taken to the next level with inspiration drawn from the Passat cc. There are similarities in the layout of materials and rounded instrumentation accentuated wit rus e c romeo There's even better detailing the power window controls are located further forward in the door, there are four hooks in the boot so that curry bags aren't strewn about and the wing mirrors are aerodynamically sculpted to reduce wind noise. Noise levels are further reduced by use of special damping film and newly developed door and window seals.

On the engine front this car marks a significant shift for VW with TOI or common-rail technology replacing VW's signature pumpe deuse diesel engines. At launch there will be two 2.0-litre TOI engines putting out nops and 140PS. These engines will come to India in the next generation Jetta next year and pretty soon the Pass at too will get TOI engines, replacing the current PO units. The trademark DSG twin¬clutch transmission will feature on all cars, either with 6 or 7-speeds.
