For once here's a Tata Motors product that won't sell on value alone. The new Indica Vista offers a very roomy cabin, far bigger than that of some larger saloons. The dashboard scores full marks for its ingenious design, the centrally-mounted gauges being the talking point. Quality too has improved over the older car.
The 1.3-litre common-rail diesel engine is the same one found under the hood of the Maruti Swift diesel. The engine offers vibration-free operation and is a joy to use. However, the gearbox could have been better and doesn't do justice to the Vista's dynamics. The relatively heavy Indica isn't as frugal as the Swift diesel either. The Vista has been engineered more for comfort than for a sporty ride, and this means that you get among the best rear seat experiences.
