The Chevrolet Volt is not a pure electric car, nor is it a hybrid. Its electric motor runs on batteries charged from a wall socket, and on batteries, has a range of about 60km. However, should wall sockets decline to appear at the 60km mark, the car will power up its little generator, which can run on petrol or bioethanol. extending the range for hundreds of kilometres.
Note the petrol motor does not propel the car, and is therefore very tiny. This actually makes sense, you know. As does the rest of the car: instead of being tiny and impractical like the Reva or even GM's EV-1 electric car of the Nineties, it's a proper four-seater, with a proper boot. Also, its electric motor pumps [or buzzes I out the equivalent of 150bhp, so it won't be a battery-powered snail. Think about it. A Volt on weekdays. A Tesla on weekends. Suddenly, electric cars don't sound so bad after all.
