Here are the numbers. India produces around one mil¬lion cars a year. Each litre of fuel burnt produces around 2 kg of carbon dioxide. Do the calculations and see what the burden to the environment in terms of carbon footprint is. And this is ignoring the other pollutants that car en¬gines produce in burning petrol. But we cannot also do without cars, can we? So here is the balancing act what about cars that do not consume so much fossil fuel and thus cut down on the damage to the environment? The techn'ology is there now. Costlier than the nom1al, electric and hybrid vehicles can help decrease carbon emissions. Fortunately, the coun¬try has some options now.
