Let's get some necessities out of the way first. House Of The Dead: Overkill has as potty-mouthed a script as we've heard in a video game in a long time. It's bursting with gore. Its graphics are really quite underwhelming (and that's being generous). And it's about as pure an arcade blast as you'll find on the Nintendo Wii.

This is the first time that Sega has brought its lightgun franchise (although it's perfectly playable with the Wiimote) to a console without it being based on an arcade version, and it's all the better for having the restraints cut.

The developers have clearly tanked up on Grindhouse movies and decided to play within the limits of the Wii's technology by delivering a grainy, crackly game that looks as if, in terms of cut scenes, it could have been lifted straight out of a 70s movie. Throw in a deliberately cheap and cheesy score, and House Of The Dead suddenly went and got itself some style.
