IF YOU VISIT A FINANCIAL DISTRICT OR ATTEND A CORPORATE CONFERENCE, YOU'RE bound to find someone carrying around a Dell Latitude D630 (Green PC). This lightweight business laptop competes with the Lenovo ThinkPad T61 Widescreen and the HP Compaq 691Op; all three share similarities like a 14-inch widescreen, highly configurable Intel parts, and terrific battery life. Since my last review of the D630, the unit has acquired several, not necessarily new, options worth talking about. Among them are a discrete graphics option for 3D-intensive purposes, solid-state drives for durability and energy efficiency, and something that the Latitude line has had since day one: "green" credentials.
In terms of raw performance numbers, the D630 held its own: Its SYSmark 2007 Preview Overall score surpassed that of both the Fujitsu LifeBook S6510 and the HP 6910p but fell behind that of the Lenovo ThinkPad T61 Wide screen by almost 23 percent. Overall, the ThinkPad took home the performance trophy because of its faster processor, discrete graphics, and a 7,200-rpm hard drive.
