The unit I am looking at the 256GB SSD ... There is a significant performance boost from this, and it does generate more or less heat than hard disk? Do you think it is worth it to get one?

Depending on what you offer SSD, do not trust them. Dell does not care what the consumer gets. NVIDIA 8600 is still selling because money gives them each a deserted! An DELL 8600 is very weak and is prone to failure and overheating.
I play very nice, and I have not had any problems at all for a whole year. Owners can attest to that. Unless you can get a good deal on a M1530, I stay away from one because the chances of obtaining an immediate GPU defective.
It is an old system, now suspended in most regional sites from Dell. I do not bother with it unless it was very cheap. Better buy a more current system and one that does not have a little concern in the back of your mind about (GPU problem).
I had a 1520 (8600, DDR2, but not 3 as the 1530) for almost two years, and the heat is a serious problem (fried my first board, it seems to fry my current). I posted this in another thread, but I will put here too.
Well once it melts I'll replace with AS5. No, and I was not kidding. He used a flat screwdriver to scrape away the big pieces, and then used some isopropyl alcohol to clean it.
Definitely, when cleaning the heatsink and the chip, just like a plastic spatula or its equivalent should be used.
That kind of nullifies the benefits of thermal compound and if the technology is going to scratch the surface.
I have an M1530, and am a good laptop, but the great "potential" problems GPU is not worth buying unless MAD cheap (and I mean MAD). I've had for about a year and a half and have had the issue once and overheating.
Well I have had since 08 February 1530. I have not had big problems with it at all.
I have boot problems 3 times over the years I have, but having regard to repairs and their own good. The 8600M GT performs well for me, no problems of overheating.
LED screen is great. But I brought external 22inch 1900 and 1200 for its beautiful screen.
Can not get the old xps1530 in Australia, now called the XPS study 16inch-I like mine. Better design.
The 8600 GPU ... could be a problem, but then never, never be a problem for you... if you bought your lappy. If so, you have 1 additional year warranty on the GPU that covers it.
