I bound an external VGA monitor to the laptop and it appears to function OK. So I conclude that it is the laptop display that the driver can not handle. I changed back to the standard FX3700M driver from Dell website and my display restored back to normal.

on these commerce models, for me, it makes no comprehend to forbear a few bucks finished newegg.com updates, because all these units turn with a warranty of 3 period (and my round attention) to ameliorate the whole so that is not thickspread under warranty. Retributory my two cents!
