WHILE THE 'POWERSHOT A' series has earned praise almost universally, the IXUS (also called SD in some markets) series has generated mixed feelings. This one though is a nice performer and has worked itself up to the second spot in this comparison. The camera produces 8MP images, and the optics include an image-stabilized 3x optical zoom lens in a compact body. There is no mode dial as such on the IXUS 80, but a switch lets you select between still image capture, video and playback modes. There is the usual Canon D-pad to select ISO, Macro, Flash and Self Timer.
This is the only camera in the comparison that has a custom timer and the user gets greater flexibility while taking self-portraits. The navigation and menu layout is a Canon standard and it is hard to find fault with it. Full points to Canon here. Detailing is excellent in the images that the IXUS 80 produces. In our indoor tests, we could very easily make out details on the motherboard which were relatively hard to find in the images the other cameras produced.
