In ORDER FOR A CAMERA TO STAND out in the Overcrowded compact arena, it has to produce high-quality images and also offer some exceptional features. When it
Comes to the latter, the 8.1-megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX55 shines with stylish design, an easy-to-navigate menu system, a big, bright 3-inch LCD, and an impressive autofocus implementation. Unfortunately, this cam falls short on image quality, especially compared with competing compact models. Replacing the FX50, the Lumix DMCFX55 sports an attractive brushed-silver case.
The camera feels well bUilt and substantial in the hOand. It's not quite small enough to fit comfortably in a back pocket, and to make room for its 3-inch LCD, Panasonic sacrificed the optical viewfinder. While I did miss having it, especially when shooting in direct Sunlight, it's becoming increasingly common for manufacturers to drop this feature in favor of a larger display, so it's hard to knock the DMC-FX55 for this.
The camera did do well on SOme labs performance tests. Boot-up time was exceptional at 2.8 seconds.
Resolution was excellent for an 8MP camera, averaging 1,900 lines on Our test. Both shutter lag and recycle times were outstanding as well, at 0.33 and 2.69 seconds, respectively, so you Won't have to Worry about missing a shot. But even with a rich feature set inclUding image stabilization and Intelligent Auto mode, the DMC-FX55 doesn't measure up to other cameras in its class, namely, for its poor image quality. You can spend less on either a Canon or a Sony point-and-shooter and get better shots in the bargain.
