THE M873 IS not so much a bargain basement deal as digging its way down from the basement into a forgotten kingdom where dinosaurs menace a fur bikini-clad Racquel Welch. At over 2-see, it's the slowest starter on test we know how it feels, we aren't morning people either. The lowres screen is poor, with banding akin to a hyperactive test card. Picture quality is disappointing with less fine detail and more noise than any other compact on the test On the plus side there are plenty of scene modes, you can tag photos ready for upload, and it's so easy to use, even a Chat! reader could pull it off. Problem is that where it matters, in picture and performance, it doesn't make the grade.
