SLRs are becoming increasingly complex and feature-rich, but the Nikon 05100 proves that complexity needn't become baffling. It offers a textbook combination of creative freedom and point*and-shoot ease that's universally appealing.
The 05100's 16.2-megapixel CMOS sensor and EXPEEO 2 processor, previously seen in the high-end Nikon 07000, are capable of really superb results. Noise is kept firmly under control by an ISO range that's expandable to 25,600. White balance, metering and the ll-point AF systems also don't disappoint. and the option to shoot high-quality Raw images is there, although not when you're using the special effects. The large range of effects, including night vision, colour sketch, miniature, selective colour, silhouette, high and low key are an easy way to add style to your snaps without having to faff about with manual controls.

Along with a host of scene modes the more advanced programme, manual, aperture, HOR and shutter exposure modes are also on hand. Sensitivity, drive mode, white balance and metering controls can all be accessed quickly via the on-screen display. The 05100's three-inch LCO is very detailed and an articulated joint allows it to be flipped out and angled to capture awkward shots. It's not easy to read in direct sunlight. but that's true of practically all LCOs. There's a dedicated record button for switching to 1080p video capture at up to 30fps and results are really good - as packed with detail as the 05100's stills. Suitable for beginners with ambition and cash to spare and more accomplished photographers alike, the 05100 is capable, very versatile and a great mid-range camera.
