It's small, it's stylish, and it captures memories. Now this statement works for the entire Canon IXUS range, including the
one that we have with us - the 115 HS. Really simple to slide into your pocket on a party weekend, this cam doesn't seem too heavy on specs at first glance. It packs a back-illuminated 12-meg sensor mated to a 4X optical zoom 28-112mm lens. Also on offer is full HD video recording, complete with a dedicated movie button and a mini HDMI port.
There's no mode dial - all you get is Canon's Smart Auto and Program Auto modes, controlled via a small slider key on top. The Smart Auto mode detects and chooses settings optimised for 32 different scenes, while the Program Auto mode lets you apply creative filters such as Toy Camera, Miniature, Fish-Eye, Poster, etc. Other options available include a high speed burst mode at 8.2 fps and best image selection (both by dropping the res to 3-megapixels), handheld night scene, and low light. The usual assortment of scene presets is also there. There's a movie digest mode that captures a four second video Just before you click a still, and later stitches all the clips together to create a movie. You can even capture vids in slow mo.

Minimal controls and the compact size make the shooter a tad fiddly to use. On the positive side, image quality is quite pleasing and certainly what can be expected from a compact camera. The videos are nice too. Worth a look if you want a compact. super simple snapper.
