With G1, Panasonic is introducing innovative mirror less structure that dramatically downsizes the camera body. G1 is much more compact than conventional SLR camera market, thanks in large part to Micro Four-thirds system, a new standard for removable lens camera. The new system has reduced the flange back distance (between the mountain and the image sensor) up to approx. 20 mm - half the 40 mm specified in the four-thirds system.
The external diameter of the mountain also decreased, by about 6 mm. Micro Four-thirds system reduces not only the camera body, but also the lenses - especially the wide-angle lens and powerful zoom lenses - while maintaining superior image quality of a 4 / 3 image sensor. G1 in the ground-breaking design forever dispels the notion of interchangeable, that the camera lens to be big and heavy - weakness, which deters many people from switching to digital SLR. Even with its generous 3.0-inch LCD, G1 is very compact - and there is absolutely no compromise in function or activity.
