The recent economic slump has forced many manufacturers to hunt for inexpensive labour and lower manufacturing costs. Thus we see China and Taiwan tags on many cameras marketed in India. A recent entry into this tag cloud is Vietnam, with Pentax shifting it's manufacturing to this country.

For a compact camera the Pentax P70 is strongly built, though not as tough as the Sony T90. The outer shell is made of a thin sheet of metal. The lens protection cover feels weak and fragile. The two flaps on the lens cover do not close tightly, resulting in a peephole when you turn the camera on its sides. The Pentax P70 features a 1/2.3-inch Type CCD with 12 million effective pixels. The camera uses a 4x optical zoom.
