THIS CAMERA FROM Sony sure looks the business. Essentially a bonsai version of Sony's flagship enthusiast camera the DSC-H9, this shooter retains most of the good stuff and does away with the unnecessary. To hold, the camera is quite comfortable with all nubs within perfect reach. Yet, it's chunky much like Kate Winslet in Holy Smoke, so you'll need to use both hands for err ... stability if you're going to be up to antics. On paper the camera seems mighty well-endowed. There's a Carl Zeiss lens to the rescue with lOX optical zoom, face detection technology and HD output for still images must you view them on an HD TV.

Start-up time is rather quick and the menus are pleasing. The XrossMedia BarSony's award winning user interface also present on the PSP and PS3, is here as well. It is great on the eyes and makes navigation a breeze. You'll pretty much love everything, until you start shooting. It isn't that this camera can't take good pictures. The colours are well-saturated, focus spot on, and noise minimal. Rather, it's the zealous noise reduction system that efficiently cuts out noise at the cost of the details as well. Often times, fine details appear hazy and washed out. Unfortunately, there's no way to turn off the noise reduction system. So forget about making poster-sized prints. It's still a great choice for the bucks you're shelling out. All Sony needs to do is knock the living daylights out of its hokey noise reduction system via a software update and all is good. Excellent looks. feel and size. intuitive GUI. rich colours Loss of detail due to noise reduction.
