The G-shot V1200, is Genius' new offering for those who want a compact camera on a tight budget. This camera is equipped with a 12 megapixel sensor and a 3x zoom lens which is standard for compact digital cameras these days. It uses SD cards for storing photos and videos, but Genius has thrown in 32 MB of onboard storage in case you don't have a memory card on hand during emergencies. The G-shot V1200 boasts a good feature set for a compact camera. In addition to Auto and Program modes, it offers aperture priority, shutter priority and manual mode. So if you find manual exposure more reliable than the camera's auto mode, you can use it to get the desired exposure. By its plain Jane looks we didn't expect the camera to be so feature rich. There's no mode selection dial for selecting shoot modes and preset scenes. Everything is selectable via menus which can be quite cumbersome at times. You can choose from 23 scene modes depending on the subject and lighting conditions. We found some features gimmicky, for instance ISO 6400 looks fancy but pictures shot at anything above ISO 400 were quite grainy and lacked details. We liked the ability of the camera to zoom in and out while shooting videos. But the sound was muted in portions of clips where we zoomed! So zooming will ruin your videos unless you're not concerned with sound.
The design of the camera won't appeal to those who like fancy gadgets. This one's like a plastic block and doesn't feel sturdy at all. The buttons are comfortably large but a bit tacky. The D-pad has shortcuts for macro mode, flash, face recognition and display details, but a shortcut to the self timer would have been more useful. But in performance, many cameras in the market which are way cheaper than this one are better. The camera is most disappointing in its main function.
