WHEN LENOVO TOOK OVER the IBM ThinkPad brand of corporate laptops, we expected mainstream-type laptops with snazzy colors to appear in the U.S. markets. Instead, Lenovo launched a small business line, the 3000 series, that looked like neither a business laptop nor a consumer one. Today, Lenovo is looking to reel in home theater enthusiasts and mainstream PC users with a new line oflaptops called the IdeaPads. The new line consists of a 17-inch IdeaPad Y710, a 15-inch Idea¬Pad Y51O, and an ultraportable dubbed the IdeaPad uno.

These laptops offer a number of unique features, including face-recognition software using the webcam, halo lighting, color media controls, and a Dolby speaker system.
The IdeaPad Y710's design looks like something that off the ASUS assembly line. Elements like the halo lighting effects on the side bezel and lid logo, the LED multimedia controls, and the brushed aluminum palm rests are sure to be a hit among home theater enthusiasts. I The full-size keyboard is bound to be awesome (the ThinkPad sports our favorite laptop keyboard) and the glossy 17-inch widescreen has a home theater feel to it. Like the Toshiba Qosmio G45 series, the Y710 includes four speakers (two on the screen and two above the keyboard), with Dolby surround sound and a subwoofer located underneath the chassis.

The optical drive will have a Biu-ray option, but screen resolution will only scale up to 1,440-by-900. The Y710 will also be one of the first laptops to use Intel's Mobile Penryn processor, showcasing an Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 (2.5GHz) .The Y510 will be a smaller version of the Y710 as it will have a 15.4-inch screen with a 1,280-by-800 resolution. It wouldn't be right if Lenovo didn't toss in some software, but it won't be business management utilities, obviously. Both have something unique that works with their l.3-megapixel webcam: The recognition software engine is composed of several components like a face detector, a face pose estimator, and face feature matching, to name a few. Prices for the Y710 will start at Rs.45,OOO.
