The look and feel
The LG KP220 is a mid segment phone with a plastic body, a shiny display and a metallic keypad. Although it looks stylish, the feel of the metallic keypad is a bit of a disappointment. This is because the metal plate seems to be very thin and the whole keypad gets slightly pushed down while pressing a button. The keys are also hard to press and we kept getting the feeling that they would just cave in if we pressed too hard. The display is quite clear and the graphics of the phone are simple and neat. All in all, the KP220 looks pretty good.
Music to the ears The phone has an MP3 player and a shortcut key is placed for it right on the top of the menu key. The D-pad acts as the play, pause, stop, and skip buttons. We could not fast forward or rewind the songs, only skip them. Adding songs to the playlist was easy we just had to go to the add button and access the folder containing the songs, for the songs to get added. The problem was that we could not select the songs at the time of adding them, although we could remove them from the playlist later. The sound quality on the loudspeaker mode was way below expectations, but was better in headphone mode.
The phone comes with a set of sound presets which can be changed by pressing the '#' key. Volume can be controlled using dedicated keys on the side of the phone and also from the mouthpiece of the earplugs which also have a volume control dial. On the other hand receiving calls using the mouthpiece of the headphones is quite a task as we had to press the call key on the mouth piece for at least 5 seconds before the call got answered.
The phone comes with an FM radio in which you can preset upto 9 channels. The radio doesn't start the moment you access it - you need to press the power on
button which is the down arrow of the D-pad. There is an option of schedule FM record as well as FM alarm. Moreover you can also record you favourite programme
or song right off the radio, using the record FM feature. There is, however, no shortcut key to access the FM radio although you can add it to shortcuts that can be accessed through the right key of the D-pad. The phone has an expandable
memory and USB connectivity but since we did not have the cable (which is proprietary), we could not test the latter.
Using the camera and going online The KP220 has a l.3-megapixel camera both for still and video recording. The picture quality is not very impressive in daylight or ous shots with its multiple shots feature. However, there is no option to edit or personalise the image on the phone. The phone is GPRS compatible and picks up settings automaticalIy. Surfing the Internet was however, not much fun due to the
small screen of the device. We could open MS Word and MS Excel sheets in the text format, as well as JPG images, but not PDFs.
The phone has a great battery backup but it shuts down suddenIy once the first band in the battery meter disappears. This hap- pened to us after we played radio
for nine straight hours and had talked for about two hours.
