Sony Ericsson's Xli was the cynosure of all eyes at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Mobile lovers were curious about Sony's first Windows Mobile phone as well as its seemingly incredible touchscreen. However, no one was allowed to touch the phone at Barcelona, so people had to be content with just looking longingly at the device. Well, Sony Ericsson was in a more generous mood at Mobile Asia. We actually managed to get out hands on the Xli and play around with it for a few minutes. To be honest, we were left with mixed feelings.

The first phone of the Xperia range looks a lot smaller than what we had imagined it to be. And the keys beneath the touchscreen seemed a bit plasticky and reminded us of the Nokia Prism. But the ease with which the full QWERTY keypad slid out from the side of the device took our breath away. The device we saw was an engineering sample, so it would be unfair to make comments about how well it functioned but we were by and large impressed by the touchscreen, although there was no sign of the much-hyped icon-driven menu. The Xli we saw at Mobile Asia may not be the finished article yet, but we are sure it will have some folks at Cupertino sweating.
