The much-awaited Q9 arrived with a blast and performed very well in our roundup. This smartphone provides a superb mix of features and power that will lure any user into its parlor. The Motorola Q9 is a quad band phone which also features GPRS Class 12 and EDGE. There is also support for 3G, with HSDPA, thus increasing its usability on foreign networks. The exterior of the phone is well designed even with the wide format that features a full QWERTY keyboard. All the buttons on the device are accessible with one hand. The additional up, down, select and back keys that are placed on the right edge of the phone increase the ease of one-handed operation.
The buttons on the phone are well spaced and give decent tactile feedback thus increasing the viability of the keyboard. Additionally there are shortcut keys for the music player, calendar, message inbox, phone book, camera, and web browser. For options that are not covered by these shortcut buttons, users can always use the numeric keys inside any menu to quickly select options. The Q9 runs Windows Mobile 6 Standard and includes YahoolGo, Windows Live, Live Messenger, Opera, and Documents To Go in addition to the usual Windows Mobile applications. The Q9 can open and edit documents from the desktop version of Office through ActiveSync. Additional applications include the very usable camera that takes pictures from the 2 megapixel lens on the rear, and has support for burst mode. It also comes with a mobile version of McAfee VirusScan.
The phone offers upto 6 and a half hours of talktime and 480 hours of standby time, which can be furthered with the included battery pack. It has a standard mini USB connector that can be used with any device with a USB port. However, since the phone itself has a micro USB connector, you will have to use the included converter.
FOR: Good keyboard, fast response, one handed operation, included battery pack.
AGAINST: Can't be used as a USB mass storage device.
