Earlier criticised for poor user interface and dumb looking phones, Motorola has improved a lot in these years and has smart looking phones coupled with good user interface and reasonable pricing. Adding to the line up of smart looking phones, Motorola has introduced the MotoMing a.ka. A1200 for people who aspire to use a PDA type phone. But as you read on, you will find the MotoMing is more of a phone than a PDA. The MotoMing is the stylish flip phone for the fashion conscious user, who will want to flaunt the phone and use it along. The phone differs from the competitors as it is based on the Linux platform, while majority of the smartphones run on Symbian or Windows Mobile OS. The looks and design of this phone are simply great. The all black and silver sides with a silver Motorola logo at the center of the face provides a premium look to the phone.
The clam-shell design is another thing worth mentioning. Unlike other clam-shells where the screen is built on the flip, this one has a transparent plastic casing with wafer thin ear-piece cable. Opening the plastic casing reveals the 2.4in 256k colour LCD screen. The display is bright and produces clear sharp text.Using the MotoMing
under the sun gave absolutely no problems in reading the screen. There is no keypad on the phone and the buttons are limited to just three; two call buttons and a 5-way joystick. On the sides, there is a volume control button on the left hand side and voice recognition and camera on the right hand side. Being a Smartphone, the MotoMing features a scheduler, eŽmail client and more.
But one of the features that we liked about the phone is the built-in business card reader. This function lets you scan the business card and copy the data in the address book of the phone. On the imaging front, the phone comes with a 2-megapixel camera that is capable of taking pictures at a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels. You can also record videos from the camera. The picture quality delivered by the phone is average. The inbuilt memory of 8MB seems to be too scarce for a smartphone, but the bundled 512MB MicroSD card negates this. The phone can also play music and video files. The in-built FM tuner also helps to reduce the boredom on the move.
The MotoMing features only Bluetooth and does not have Infrared or EDGE. You can connect the phone with the PC with the bundled USB cable and transfer files. The phone can also be charged by connecting it to the PC via the USB cable. The interface of the phone is simple. The top of the homescreen features four shortcuts of applications like Menu, Contacts, SMS and dialer. At the bottom of the homescreen, there are five shortcuts that can be assigned to your favourite applications. The phone also has a airplane mode that enables you to access all other functions of the phone except the calling mode. Priced at Rs.11,500, the MotoMing is a more of a stylish phone rather than a PDA.
