Having won our On Test in May 2007, this offering from Cowon is a complete portable entertainment solution and not just an MP3 player. It has a generous 2.5in TFT display, which is crisp and clear. It's also the only one in this group to offer touch screen controls - notably better than, say, the iPod's clickwheel. The user interface is so good and so intuitive, even your Mum could use this player without any trouble!
The D2 offers superb sound quality. The bundled headphones are the same as used in the F2, and we're not complaining. For the touch screen controls, you can either use the touch pen (a triangular bit of plastic, not unlike a guitar pick ... ) which is attached to the player with an elastic string, or even your very own fingers. But yes, the screen does tend to get a bit smudged after some time, so we recommend using a screen protector.
The D2 supports MP3, WMA, OGG Vorbis, FLAC, APE and WAY file formats. It also features a voice recorder, FM tuner, picture/text viewer and video playback for AVI and WMV video formats. The D2 comes with a conversion utility called JetToys that converts videos specifically for the D2's screen and auto uploads the video to the D2 once it's completed.
For sound enhancement, there are preset equalisers like Mach3Bass and 3D Surround. Cowon claims a battery life of 52 hours with music or up to 10 hours of decent-quality video. For those who need more memory, an SD card slot allows you to add more to the player's 2GB of Flash memory. With its good sound quality, touchscreen interface, large and clear display, list of extra features and great battery, this player is a must for all audiophiles.
