PACKING AN N95-ESQUE five-meg camera, fast web browser, satnav and media player into a considerably less hulking body, the latest N Series phone is Nokia's best yet, and confirms their position as the out and out leader when it comes to multimedia mobiles. The camera has a Carl Zeiss lens, face detection and taking a leaf out of rival Sony Ericsson's book a proper Xenon flash as well, so snaps are crisp and sharp. So much so, in fact, that you may as well leave your point and shoot compact at home to rot.
Video is excellent, especially via the TV-out cable that comes bundled with the phone. Covert footage of joyful, rosy cheeked youngsters trashing your wing mirrors look terrific on the big screen. Web-wise, HSDPA keeps things ticking along nicely, where available that is. As with other N Series mobiles, clever browser design means that navigating pages is a snap.
The satnav is far faster than the terrible early days of the N95, when trying to find a route to the nearest pub involved waiting 15 painful minutes for a GPS signal. With Symbian keeping things chugging along nicely, this is on the highway to perfection.
Unfortunately, the awful battery life throws up very nasty roadworks on said highway. Indulge in only modest amounts of browsing, snapping, listening and navving, and you'll be lucky to eke 24 hours oflife per charge out of it.
