Following in the footsteps of the E61i, which won our smartphone comparison test over 7 months ago, Nokia has added the E71 to its E-series stable. The Nokia E71 is just 10mm thick and 54 mm wide and comes encased in dual tone metallic finish. It is one of the slimmest smartphones we have reviewed without compromising on build quality.

Nokia has managed to throw in a full QWERTY keypad on this slim body making it a little cramped but still useable. The 2.36-inch screen is crisp and vibrant, thanks to the 16 million color support. Viewing long documents and webpages is comfortable and with the processor upgraded to 369 MHz and RAM to 128MB, running different applications or playing games is no longer an issue. Its 110MB of internal memory should be enough for most people, but for those who want more there is a 2GB microSD card in the package.

The phone uses Symbian S60 v3 with Feature Pack 1 OS along with some enhancements. Except for the Switch mode, we found more standby active plug-ins, Easy Dial function and the redesigned calendar and contacts really useful. Its Quick Office can create, view and edit all office documents with most basic formatting options. Then, there is Adobe PDF LE, Zip Manager, Dictionary and other business applications.

Call quality is great on this phone without much drop during calls. It has EDGE, 3G with HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity. The built-in browser has RSS feeds reader, full support for Java and Flash. The mouse cursor presence makes browsing a pleasurable experience. Though exclusion of Blackberry Connect may be a deal breaker for some, setting up business like MS Exchange and web mail services is a painless process.

The GPS feature using either the builtin GPS chip or A-GPS with turn-by-turn and voice guided navigation took only a few minutes to get the signal fix and the Nokia Map 2.0 worked flawlessly while driving or walking. For multimedia, there is a 3.2MP camera with auto-focus that is good enough for outdoor shoot¬ing, a music player and FM radio. With all the goodies it offers, the exceptional performance and striking design, the Nokia Ell, with its price tag of is our first choice when it comes to business phones.
