Like most AVRs of the day, the SR-500l features all the common processing modes plus another dying breed Circle Surround that works in a similar way to Dolby Pro Logie-II but it also allows broadcast engineers to encode upto 6.1 channels of sound and transmit them via a stereo transmission, only to be decoded by a capable device, such as this Marantz. Compared to the sound of other receivers, the Marantz has slightly more verve to it that makes it ever so slightly musical and a great match for upmarket bookshelf speakers.
