The first thing one notices about the Asus M930 is its unmistakeable and stark resemblance to the Nokia E90. Yes. it is a QWERTY clamshell with two screens: one on the top where the alphanumeric keypad is placed. and the other inside with a QWERTY keypad. Hold it in your hand and you will know what we mean when we say that the phone is thick robust. Compared to the Nokia Communicator, it is smaller in size and the thickness is equally distributed all across its body.
The phone's power button is on the top right of the screen with a metallic lining all around it. There are two broad metallic keys, at the bottom of the screen which are short keys for 'Start' and 'Contact', easily disguised as the part of the metallic rim! Below the screen is the metallic D-pad surrounded by the calling keys. back key, and home key. The compact keypad, despite its closely stacked keys, is pretty comfortable to use. Opening the clamshel results in a 2.6-inch display (the E90 has a 4-inch screen with better resolution) with a QWERTY keypad. However, on both sides of the screen there are wide black bands, which could have been used to provide a wider screen for better usual experience.
Unlike the alphanumeric keypad the QWERTY one is hard and uncomfortable to use. Another D-pad is placed on the right and short keys for 'Start' and 'Contacts' arc placed on the top. 111e volume rocker and the camera key arc in the right of the lower panel, just below the microSD card slot. Overall. the Asus 1930 is a moderately good looking device.
The Asus M930 runs on Windows Mobile 6 and the interface is simple but doesn't stand out in any way. It has a 50MHz proccssor (which is more powerful than the 1:90) but still tends to work pretty slowly. This might be because it has only 64 MB RAM to run the phone's applications. However, the storage memory stands at 256MB. This device comes loaded with a document viewcr and does not support editing the downloaded files.
There is also the MySecret application that enables you to encrypt any file stored in the phone by setting a four-digit password to it. The phone also has a remote presenter application that converts the phone into a remote which allows you to control your Powerpoint presentations on PC via Bluetooth. The connectivity options include HSDPA and Wi-Fi and the Bluetooth function comes with an A2DP support.
The multimedia options of the Asus M930 include a 2.0 megapixel camera that can capture reasonably good pictures, but takes a while to launch. The picture quality is acceptable both in the video and still modes. The music player is standard and comes with a Windows Media Player. But the sound quality did not measure up to our expectations and lacked power. The phone also comes preloaded with a streaming player.
The internet surfing experience was admirable, easy and enjoyable. Howevcr. a bigger screen 011 the inside would h,we added to the experience. Setting up GPRS or a Wi-Fl connection was simple as most of the settings happened automatically. The GPS feature was conspicuous in its absence. which today is pretty much unlike the norm preyalent in enterprise phones. Another impressive feature was the battery backup, as charging the phone once easily kept the phone working approximately for two days with continuous calling and Internet surfing.
