02 XDA Flame

The Flame is a tri-band phone with support for the GSM 900, 1800, and
1900 standards. Additional connectivity is present in the form of 3G, GPRS class 10, Bluetooth 20, and Wi-fi 802.11 big There is no support for HSCSD, HSDPA, or EDGE so high speed internet users are in for a big letdown. The phone comes with Windows Mobile 5 pre-installed, along with mobile versions of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint These are fully featured, with support for even the more advanced features in Microsoft Office, such as formulae in Excel and animations in PowerPoint. The phone is still being tested for compatibility with Windows Mobile 6 so there is no way to upgrade the OS at the moment.

The Flame has a huge display that measures 3.6 inches diagonally, and can display a resolution of 480 x 640 with 65K colors. This display, when rotated to the landscape orientation, can display content at 640 pixels wide and 480 pixels in height, which is the same resolution that we remember running Windows 3.1 at on our 14-inch monitors just over a decade ago! The main 2-megapixel camera is on the rear of the phone, and is capable of autofocus, which is quite snappy. The physical construction seems pretty solid. Another VGA camera on the front of the phone can be used to take self portrait shots and will be of additional use when video conferencing is available in India. Button layout is a standard Pocket PC affair, with two soft keys, a Windows key, one shortcut button, and call and end buttons all around a five way direction pad.

On the hardware front, the PDA phone uses an Intel XScale PXA 270 processor that runs at 520 M Hz, which makes it similar to its siblings. The difference here is that at 128MB, there is a much larger amount of RAM compared to other phones in the series. The phone is a big leap in terms of graphics technology, as it is the first one available in India that has a dedicated GPU; the Nvidia GoForce 5500, to handle graphics processing. However we did not see any apparent increase in performance during regular usage Video playback was smooth and graphics were crisp, but we cannot attribute that to the presence of the GPU.

The phone, though targeted at business users, has a number of entertainment options built in. There is an FM radio, Windows Media Player Moblie and even composite TV-out functionality that works well for presentations with PowerPoint A TV-out cable is included in the package, and connects to TVs through a standard composite RCA connector. For storage, the Flame has 2GB of memory onboard, plus support for microSD cards that go in a slot on the right side of the phone. For even more storage options, the phone supports USB OTG (USB On The Gol through its standard miniUSB connector, allowing access to files on any USB mass storage device.

This connector is also used for syncing to a computer and for charging the phone.
Looking at the phone side of things, call quality is really impressive and the device exhibits good network reception. The handsfree speaker is very loud for a phone and has impressive sound quality. However it is quite big at around 5 inches long and almost 3 inches wide. It weighs around 190 grams. The 1620mAh Lithium Polymer battery lasts almost two days with light usage but will need to be charged every day with heavy multimedia usage FOR: Big screen, lots of space, very good call quality.
