There are an awful lot of acronyms and mysterious numbers attached to Blu-ray players and their instruction manuals, but the most important thing to know about the Panasonic DMP-BD30 is that it's got them all.

Let's tick them off. 1080p/24fps. This player delivers its pictures to a similarly equipped display at the correct cinematic, speed. HDMI 1.3 On board. It's able to stream Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master-HD soundtracks to an amplifier or decoder. BD 1.1This is the first player to have it. All the extra Blu-ray goodies we were promised yonks ago, like picture-in- picture video commentary, can be handled by the Panasonic. Just a pity no one's released any movies to test it with yet ...

Thankfully, it's got the pictures and sound to back up the full-fat specification. Blu-ray discs look thrilling via the Panasonic colours are vivid, motion is confident and there's a stack of detail to be seen. Even black tones are deep and inky. HD audio soundtracks are punchy, dynamic and, well, cinematic. The DMP-BD30 is also fine as a DVD player and not an outright dunce when it comes to playing CDs.
