Following up on last month's superlative WR700, the ST-800 headphones step up the comfort level to maximum. Sure,
they're a bit heavy but the padded ear cups spread the weight evenly across your ears, making for a pleasant aural experience. It's a very classy piece of kit with an understated colour scheme. There's an intuitive on-ear volume wheel that makes it extremely easy to crank up (or lower) your tunes. The big draw however, is the in-line graphic equaliser. It's the reason why you need two AAA batteries. The ST-800 can run just fine without them but you won't be able to fidget with the bass or treble as you please. Having said that, the pair is fantastic minus the equaliser too. Bass is punchy and the treble is crisp. Be it Limp Bizkit's latest emo*rock tracks or the slick beats of LA Noire's 1940s jazz, it's played everything we threw
At it with aplomb. And while the equaliser did allow us to manipulate the sound to our liking, it ended up making the default output shine even more. The high price point of the ST-800 ensures that you get a cloth bag and an 8-foot extension cable. Be warned though, they don't fold so it would be prudent not to take this ten*rupees-Iess-than-a-five-figure priced audio instrument out on a local train or bus ride. But if you've managed to pick up a pair of these, you'd be using other, more sophisticated forms of travel, yes?
