MapMylndia is certainly gung-ho about the Indian market. Their second GPS device in a span of a month is out. Priced the same as their other unit (a Delphi NAV 200), this device, the A-MAX 06GP5A shares many features with its brother. We reviewed the Delphi NAV200 in LD, November 2007 (page 94). While the maps and terms of service remain the same, the new device is completely different. So what's new? A-MAX is a smaller brand than Delphi obviously, based in Hong Kong. But it does have some aces up its sleeve. The screen is noticeably brighter than the Delphi and therefore is more visible in the daytime. Secondly, it supports a lot more video formats than the Delphi, including AVI, WMV, MPEG, MOVand AMR-making it a much better device if you want both GPS and entertainment in your car.

GPS navigation as the core function, functions the same way. It's all touch¬based, and you can either use your finger or the included stylus. Unlike the Delphi, the A-MAX unit does not have a pop-up antenna and this does affect its signal strength somewhat. For example, with the Delphi, we were able to easily lock on to 4 satellites indoors, seated next to a glass window. The A-MAX couldn't lock on to the required number of satellites seated at the same window, at the same time of day and with similar weather conditions. There is the option to attach an external antenna if you need it though. As usual, all-India maps are provided and I tested it out in Delhi- NCR, Bangalore and Chennai, and it worked flawlessly and seamlessly.
As always, you do need to know where you're going (the full address) in order to enter the destination correctly. Even the video, audio and photo capabilities are great. It can function as your complete in-car entertainment device. With the 3.5 mm audio out, you can connect it to a compatible car stereo and enjoy MP3 songs through your car speakers too. Power backup is limited though. The built-in 1100 mAh battery will give you about an hour and a half of GPS navigation. The supplied 12V adapter will have to be used for in-car usage. Overall, an excellent complement to the existing device and better suited for someone who wants more than just a GPS device.
