There are just two basic types of camcorder¬digital and analogue - but each comes in many varieties. If you bought your camcorder a while ago, it may use analogue tape (VHS-C, Video8 or Hi8), in which case you'll need special analogue-to-digital capture hardware to transfer footage from tapes to a Pc. Some cameras shoot straight to hard disk or memory cards, but picture quality can suffer because of the compression used in these formats.
