Onkyo's been hi-def ready for a long time now but most of its products have veered towards the premium segment. That's why this budget HTiB is such a big deal. It promises to work without a hiccup with your Blu-ray player and flat panel telly while, most importantly, going easy on the pocket.
Living up to its 'Home Theatre in a Box' tag, this 7.1 channel setup goes that extra length to ensure that assembling this is a simple affair. The package includes seven satellites, a monstrous subwoofer, the main AV receiver, a barrage of speaker cables and audio connectors, and Onkyo's Audyssey patented tech that automatically calibrates the sound to the optimal levels.
The satellites sport a glossy black finish which harks back to the '80s spandex era. Their plasticky build is hardly reassuring, but wall mounts at the rear ensure that the speakers can be placed out of harm's reach. The AV receiver oozes pro-ness though. It has more connections than Dawood Ibrahim and looks quite the business.
Packing in 130W of power per channel and a 290W subwoofer, this Onkyo isn't one to be reckoned with. It offers three HDMI v1.3 inputs, one output, and supports Blu-ray in all its pride and glory.
Sound quality is quite satisfying. The subwoofer, though huge and menacing, never overpowers the rest of the system. Bass is tight and the centre channel offers great clarity as well- you'll hardly ever have an issue following hushed dialogues in The Taking of Pelham 123. The highs are a tad on the lower side though and the sound doesn't envelope the room the way you'd expect. Still, this Onkyo impresses even if you blast it aloud. Now that's saying a lot.
