The desktop speaker is probably one of the most price sensitive component in an average desktop computer. Most people skimp on their speaker setups and then form opinions that computers are not good for audiophile level sound quality. The i-Trigue 2300 is a 20 speaker system from Creative's line-up of budget desktop speakers and we take a closer look at it.

BUILD: The speaker system has two 36 mm full range drivers that look really good. The cabinet is made from plastic and features an internal amplifier inside the right speaker. There are two controls on the right speaker for bass and treble balance and volume control. The volume control dial also serves as a power switch and clicks to denote the off mode. The speakers are powered with an external power brick which is really huge and connects behind the right speaker along with the audio connectors.

There is a headphone out under the tone dial which switches off output to the speakers when a earphone is connected to the 3.5 mm jack. Setup is simple and involves connecting the power cable from the bundled adapter and audio cable from the left speaker to the right speaker, on to connectors that are properly denoted on the back panel of the speaker.

PERFORMANCE: As usual, with cheaper desktop speakers, the highs are a bit spiked, and bass leaves much to be desired, with mostly the mids coming thorugh. The cabinet does have a reflex port behind the speaker so bass response can be improved by placing the speakers in front of a solid object. Additionally, tone controls on the right speaker can be used to improve the tonal balance a bit by reducing the treble according to taste. The speakers have decent imaging and a narrow but detailed soundstage is formed. The drivers start distorting at around 70 percent to the maximum volume level. This should not be the case as the speakers are slightly more expensive than normal budget speakers.
