These headphones will definitely make you look every bit like the uber gamer that you want to be. The Altec Lansing 615 also called the Stereo Gaming Headset with Mic has nearly all the elements going right for it. The AHS 615 looks quite impressive even though it's considerably large. The headset completely covers the wearer's ear (circum-aural) and is still really comfortable to wear. The drivers themselves are not actually closed like in a typical circum-aural headphone, but have an outer cushioning ring that covers the ear pinna.

Thus there is a gap between the driver and the cushion that allows ventilation through the padding. The construction feels really good with cushions that feel plush, straps that hold well, and an easily adjustable mic that is put on a swivel arm. The connectors on the headset are gold plated which should theoretically enhance the quality of the signal transfer, as compared to normal connectors. These headsets have large 40mm NeoDymium drivers that sound impressive a run for their money. The sound itself is pretty crisp and all the frequencies are well balanced, however since this is a 'gaming' headset the highs the bass are slightly enhanced to give a livelier sound.

The soundstage is pretty much alright but not comparable to proper headphones. The 615 features an inline remote with a volume control on one side, a two level mic switch on the other and controls for a DSP chip from SRS. This chip requires power from a single AAA battery and can be turned on to provide enhanced spatial effects. The spatial effects are mostly gimmicky and do not sound good with most music that we tried. The inline remote has a clip at the back to hold it to the wearer's shirt pocket. Probably the only complaint we had with these headsets was the size of the controller which can also become quite heavy when a battery is inserted for the SRS effects.

FOR: Very comfortable, SRS effects.
AGAINST: Large controller.
