Remember the scene in the movie Minority Report where Tom Cruise uses 3D holographic interface to track down people before they commit crimes? Pravda holographic projection technology still years away from reality, but some Japanese scientists, at least, is moving in the right direction.

This is not a hologram, but also Japan, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) has developed a 3D display, which uses intersecting infrared lasers to create small plasma emission in mid-air. By controlling the position of the focal point in the x-, a-, and with axes, the visible points of the plasma to form letters and simple shapes in 3D space.

If you attended SIGGRAPH 2006, you might have seen this fantasy laser projector on the screen. If not, but here your chance. Watch the video here.

He is probably only a matter of time until advertisers begin using this technology as a form of night skywriting.
