IN LAST MONTH'S projector roundup, the lesser known Vivitek did quite well. The one we're reviewing this time, the 0732 MX is aimed at a slightly higher bracket. The projector looks quite good, with an integrated grab handle making it easy to carry around. Featurewise, it packs in quite a bit: A native resolution of 1024x768, an ANSI lumen rating of 3200, a contrast ratio of 2100:1 and support for Composite, S-Video inputs, OVI and VGA inputs.

In our tests, this projector did very well. In fact, the clarity and brightness of its picture was very close to last month's winner. It passed the focus tests with flying colors, and the moire reduction was fantastic. Our contrast ratio and lumens tests were slightly disappointing, with the projector getting 974 lumens. This is actually a pretty good score, but given the excellent picture quality, our expectations were raised just that little bit more. Still, in a larger context, it's not lacking in these departments. Colors were vivid and we could not detect any color cast or banding in any of the test screens. The projector dealt with all the test screens with nary a hitch.

The layout of the controls is quite intuitive. The buttons are a bit fiddly though, and feel slightly tacky. The remote controller feels more substantial, and carries the trademark Vivitek laser pointer. The lens cap slides into the body, so it's not possible to lose it. Covering the lens does not switch off the lamp though, unlike the Epson we tested last month. As a projector aimed at small businesses, the Vivitek 0732MX delivers on its promise of crisp images. The only flaw we could find is the slightly high price, but a rated lamp life of 3000 hours could help to defray that cost.
