CAN EXTERNAL HARD ORlVES GET ANY SMALLER? ACCORDING to Toshiba, the answer is a resounding yes. At CES, Toshiba Storage Device Division (SSD) rolled out its newest external hard drive models, including the first 1.8-inch external hard drive and what it's calling the industry's highest capacity 2.5-inch external hard drive.
Toshiba's 1.8-inch USB 2.0 Mobile External Hard Drive will be available in 60GB, 80GB, and 120GB capacities. Its diminutive size means users can easily store the drive in a briefcase, purse, or even your pocket for easy transport.

The 1.8-inch drive will include encryption and backup software to protect the drive should it ever be lost or stolen. To-shiba will also be bundled with a USB cable and will be bus-powered for easy plug-and-play functionality. Meanwhile, Toshiba's newest 2.5-inch USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive models will be available in 160GB, 250GB, and 320GB capacities. Toshiba says the 320GB model can store the equivalent of up to 91,000 digital photos, 84,000 MP3 music files, 142 hours ofDVD videos, or 37 hours of high-definition videos.

The hard drives will be automatically powered via a USB cable connected to a user's Pc. It comes bundled with NT! Shadow software. All this allows users to connect the drive to their PCs via the USB port. The drive then runs in the back ground to automatically back up data, depending on the parameters set by the user the first time they hook the drive up to the Pc.

Toshiba has also transformed the drives' outward appearance. The company's newest drives sport a sleek, consumer friendly design and several color options for the 2.5-inch drives, specifically Carbon Grey, Hot Rod Red, and Gecko Green. The redesigned 2.5-inch external models offer a nearly 20 percent smaller footprint than the previous line Toshiba says that the 1.8-inch hard drives will be shipping in the spring. Prices for the 1.8-inch models have not yet been finalized.
