This is the fifth entry in the $ 600 gadget contest and Eric made us proud including the promo picture and review, Eric nice now more for the review.
For the price of $ 1400, I simply could not say 'No' to this great HDTV Monitor. True, it does not have HDTV tuner included, but I did not use their regular TV antennas for 8 years, I realized it was a moot point. It worked great right out of the box, and at just under 60 kilograms, it was easy to carry on my work (where it was made) to my house, and as easily put at the top of my 4 foot high entertainment centre.
It comes with a lot of materials (1xVGA, 1x Composite video, 1x S-Video, 2x Component video, 2x DVI-HDCP, RCA Phono 2x and 1x Mini audio stereo 3.5 mm), it was easy to connect various peripherals mine. And now my HDTV cable box, computer, dvd / video and connected ps2, all with their own dedicated connection, albeit with input / output connectors are located in the middle of the rear of the right and left standing is very easy to switch things around. I have mines planted on the bench included, but it is very easy to connect wall-mount and continue to be able to easily get to your connectors.
Once you have it set up, the real fun begins with 1080p (1920 × 1080) HD permits for a maximum of pleasure. It also automatically detects various resolutions proposed formats for standard definition TV signals (480i), the expansion of the definition signals (480p), and 720i and 720p signals, as well as the apparent 1080i and 1080p formats, as well as their formats to display on the screen for better picture quality . While this does not mean that you will have black bars on the sides or top of the screen, depending on the format, you are showing, the "fill" button on the remote control included lets you "stretch" the image to fill the entire screen. You sometimes lose their outer edges of the picture because of the "stretching" in the picture, but I found it to be minimal, with all programming, I have encountered so far. I personally do not mind black bars, but, as the wife hates them, I used television as a path many times, and find a pleasant. At 178 degrees viewing range is also a useful supplement, and although the picture is still very visible, and colorful extreme edge with viewing angle, dulling some paintings can be seen, but it is certainly better than most other LCDs I experimented with when it comes to the ability to see the picture clearly from wide viewing angles, for example, when you have multiple guests on the night for the movie, just make sure that you have enough room, because everyone would be awed at 1080p resolution. I have found that when watching SD (standard definition) television, I sometimes very thin bar at the top of the screen, which looks like a bar code. These are just a few pixels, and to fix it by filling the screen, as mentioned before, but I felt I said that it must be fair because some people do not like to use the filling option, which changes the aspect ratio of 4: 3 to 16:9 and, as a rule that all look a little wider. I tend not to notice the problem after about 10 seconds of watching, as soon as I use filling option, but as annoy my wife, to see everything that has been "stretched".
There is one drawback, on the remote control, the television seems to have a few small field use. He sometimes may not respond to commands, unless it points directly to the screen, and it will not respond very well to several teams, imposed very quickly. I am using the remote control provided by my cable provider, and how to work more effectively, although now that I am using for my stereo sound (2 TV has audio outputs), the only time I need to "talk" directly with the TV is to turn it off, and, or select another contribution.
In the audio on this TV is surprisingly strong, with 3 speakers (1 left and right, 1 Centre bass), which are hidden in the construction of housing for HDTV display, which helps keep the footprint of the units to a minimum. There is a small irritation with sound, which is that you can choose (via the menu), or audio coming through the television, or sent via audio output for external speakers, but you can not have an opportunity at the same time. I was able to circumvent this problem by connecting secondary "audio out" on my cable box directly to my car stereo, while connecting major "audio out" (along with the main video) on TV. This allowed me to use Westinghouse speakers as my center channel, and my stereo sound for the audio part.
We hope you noticed my mention of VGA connector on this HDTV monitor, but you can also use DVI connector if your video card supports one. I had no problem displaying on the desktop of my computer, images and video on the screen, but you want any game you play widescreen resolution supporting at least 1280 1024, or earlier, to achieve the best results, although you should be aware that plays something less than 1920 × 1080, did not look as crisp and clear on the screen. This is, after all, as the resolutions of work. The higher the resolution you are using, the more pixels there are, and less "blocky" picture will appear. My one complaint with the installation of input connectors is that they are somewhat "bundled" together. For example, if you want to use your DVI connector to connect your PC to the monitor, you must also use this component (red / white) audio connector associated with it. In 3.5 mm audio connector (microphone or headset type) , will work only if you use a VGA connector for video. you can not choose what audio uses the TV at any given time, as a TV tuned so that when you are connected with a specific video input, the associated audio connector is used as well. This I need to buy a $ 6 cable from my local electronics store to be able to run the audio from the audio 3.5 mm slot on my computer to the consolidated red / white material on my monitor.
The picture is fantastic out of the box, although I found most useful function from the menu that is "color temperature" option. This allows you to choose one of 3 options: Warm, neutral and cool. The TV out of the box set to "neutral". If you discover that your picture of the current programmes is too "red" or "hot", you can change this option to cool, and the TV will automatically adjust the color scheme for skewing the color palette in the blue area, calming some of the redness of the overall picture . It works in both directions, as well as to make viewing programs that are too "Cool" and "blue" skewing slightly warmer on the color scheme to red end of the spectrum, which may lead people to the bright lights look a bit more natural in color.
The rest of the menu fairly standard fare, though still interesting feature is that your settings for each input selection, in the memory of the TV, so if you want a game console setup differs cables picture window settings, then you will not have to switch to retain settings Every time you select a different entrance. The main complaint I can find in the menu is that all options in black text, except for the particular choice of blue text, which can sometimes be difficult to distinguish if you have turned down the brightness on the dark room. Mention brightness brings me to another great feature of this monitor is HDTV, which, unlike other LCD TVs, has a wide range of brightness selection, and I have no problems with the screen too dim to bright light (I have several large windows in my life room) or it appears black, gray as a very dark room (if, as you turn down the brightness).
If you read many reviews for this product, especially in the period from 8 months or older, you can see comments on the issues of power, or "sparklies." They reported problems in this model, which sets out a new firmware installed on the device. I (and my friends 2, which also bought one), was not one of those problems, and I have not seen these problems in many recent reviews.
Overall, I am very pleased with my Westinghouse 42 "LVM-42W2 HDTV 1080p LCD monitor, and you (and, perhaps more importantly your friends and family) will be too! While I have already mentioned some of my annoyances with the device, I really could not have asked for a better solution for my viewing needs, and certainly not at the price that the HDTV Monitor. I would highly recommend to access Discovery HD. He does not have the same program as the Discovery Channel SD (darn you mythbusters!), But the quality of the video simply amazing! The other night I found myself looked at the program for 40 minutes, entitled "Migration". He was nothing more than images of birds flying around North America, and the picture was absolutely incredible!
