Launching your own DVD player would seem the appropriate thing to do after having
earned a name in the blank CDs and DVDs department. Moserbaer has decided to step onto the other side of the camera with the low-segment MB-6988 DVD player and from what we hear, they've made a grizzly out of it.
OUT OF THE BOX:-
Simplicity is the fundamental design principle every DVD player manufacturer should follow when they're dealing with this under-Rs 5,000 segment. Moserbaer has done just that by giving the 6988 a neat, black shell that's not too thin neither too thick. It's as fit as the giants of the jungle but without all that weight even though its aesthetics say something else.
TECHNOLOGY:-
Just by looking at it, one can tell that this player is just too uncomplicated in design to ever have embraced HDMI/DVI technology Hence, the 6988 is not HD-ready and doesn't intend to be, however, there's a nice little USB port on the back panel along with a wide variety of other connectivity options (component, and even a TRS microphonein). The disc tray is a little on the flimsy side, a point we've come to accept in this range of players.
The 6988 can play all the formats that most of other players in this segment can play including DivX and JPEG along with MPEG4 to help that USB port out which is most probably going to be used to hook up a portable player. The OSD (On-Screen Display) menu has again been designed keeping the unsophisticated in mind. It allows you to adjust some basic audio and video options including brightness, contrast and sharpness (low, mid, hi). That's really all you need in these players, but only if they work in tandem with the remote.
PERFORMANCE:-
When it comes to women and technology, we like fast and the 6988 didn't disappoint. It slid in our 'Shrek The Third' DVD, which took only about 7 seconds to process the opening clips and get them on our television. We'd connected the composite and the component ports to our television, expecting this player to have its component mode switched off by default, which is usually the case with these players, but quite surprisingly, it was on. With an unexpected smile we were ready to roll.
