It seems that the fight for the living room entertainment is heating up between Microsoft and Sony, with the latter announcing that the PS3 in Europe users will be able to perform both recording and playback of digital TV on their console - where gamers leave? I personally believe that more PS3-empowerment and functions, does not bode well for the console too high energy, as may eventually as a Jack of all trades, but I could be wrong. Of course, this news is accompanied by the opening ceremony of the spanking new TV tuner that plugs directly into the PS3, making it (with the help of some magic pixie dust), in an instant personal video recorder, as Sky +. The announcement was made at the Game Show Leipzig in Germany, and it was one that continued to push mantra of key multimedia features found on Cell-food PS3.
The dual TV tuner for the PS3 called PlayTV and will be launched early next year in various countries such as Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Spain, with plans to bring the stage PlayTV with other countries at a later date. You can stream recorded programmes on the wireless Internet connection to your PSP, with the ability to transfer data via the USB wire, if necessary. Currently, access will be restricted free channels, which are delivered over digital terrestrial, which makes it the first console to support this possibility. Rival Microsoft's Xbox 360 did mention the use of their console as a platform for Internet-TV, but now Xbox Live video download service remains as a US-only service.
I suspect in PlayTV appeal only to those who are well aware of the enormous potential of PS3, but, unfortunately, that few in number and compared with the general population, which does not need the power in their living rooms. The last group will be those that drive sales should catch the idea, but it looks as if they wanted to settle for specific functions of the device, and not something many as talented as PS3. What's your two cents on this issue?
