Besides Apple there's only one company that has the engineering might to drop jaws. We always eagerly await the next Vaio release because Sony understands the folloWing better than any other Windows PC manufacturer: 1) A new product must be beautiful and 2) its beauty must not compromise its performance. This time, though, it seems that Sony's been outdone by the new iMac.
Its processing power, storage space and networking standards are all a little old-school. and the laptop graphics card it sports won't play recent 3D games at respectable frame rates. But we're willing to put up with that because it runs Vista fast and smooth and the general experience is a joy - from using the wireless aluminium-clad keyboard to watching digital TV through the Media Center interface.

While it certainly looks the business, in the face of the competition, the Sony's superb 19in display seems small and it just doesn't quite have the specs to match its multimedia ambitions. The only area in which it outperforms the iMac is sound - its built-in speakers are really rather good, and would make the LA2 a great bedroom entertainment system. But 1400 is a hell of a lot to pay for that and a fancy clear bezel.
