THE Z-2300 FROM Logitech, sports the most impressive power ratings of the lot. With a 200W RMS tag, the total power rating is almost in the league of high-end 5.1 PC speaker systems. The system is THX certified and has an intimidatŽing foot print, thanks to the mammoth subwoofer rated at 120W RMS. The satellites are rated at 40W RMS each. The fact that your average laptop or desktop speakers are rated somewhere in the range of 5-10W RMS should give you an idea of the firepower in its belly. The Z-2300 has a 100db SNR (signal-to-noise) ratio and the rated frequency response is 35HZ-20kHz. The Altec LanŽsing MX5021 comes second in terms of power ratings. With a total of 90W RMS rating, the sub-woofer is rated at 50W RMS while the satellites are 20W RMS each. The MX5021 boasts a best-in-class rated frequency response of 30HzŽ22 kHz. A better frequency response range indicates the speaker's ability to cover a wider range, resulting in a fullŽer listening experience.

The Logitech Z-4 and the J B L S pot have relaŽtively lower specs with a total power rating of 40W and 36W RMS respectively. While in the same price bracket, these products are slightly skewed towards the lifestyle segment with slick designs and compact foot prints. The Z-4 carries the same frequency response as the Z-2300 and the Spot from JBL is rated a tad lower at 40Hz-20 kHz. As menŽtioned earlier, while these specifications are indicative of what the speaker systems are capable of, and cannot be taken as the last word in real-world performance.
